Genesis

At a meeting of some eminent scientists and officers of the State, convened by the Education Department in the year 1962, Sri Raju P.V.G., the then Education Minister of the Andhra Pradesh, who was a great visionary, mooted the formation of forum for all scientists and researchers in the State.

Thus, the state science academy, "Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Science," the first of its kind in the country, had come into existence with fifty foundation members, nominated by Government, in March 1963. Prof. Humayun Kabir the then Union minister for Education, formally inaugurated the Akademi at colorful function in the Jubilee Hall, Hyderabad, on 23rd December 1963.

Sri Brahmanandareddy Kasu, the then State Finance Minister presided over the inaugural meeting and graciously sanctioned a sustenance grant of Rs. 50,000/- for the Akademi – an indication of the keen interest taken by the Government in the advancement and popularization of Science.

 


AIMS & OBJECTIVES

The main objectives of the Academy, propounded in the original document prepared at the times of its constitution are as follows.

  1. The Advancement of Science in Andhra Pradesh.
  2. To provide a forum for reading and discussing Scientific Papers.
  3. Propagation of Scientific Knowledge among people by organizing lectures, seminars symposia, tours and excursions exhibitions and distribution of books of popular sciences.
  4. Establishment of Science Museum
  5. Establishment of Library with reading room to serve as central library for all scientific workers.
  6. Publication of Books and journals on Science.
  7. To secure and manage funds and endowment for the promotion of Science.
  8. To assist voluntary science organizations.
  9. To do and to perform all other acts, matters and things that may assist in, conductive to, or be necessary for the fulfillment of the above mentioned aims and objectives of the Akademi.

JOURNAL OF A.P. AKADEMI OF SCIENCES

 

The A.P. Akademi of Sciences has been publishing the journal of the academy entitled "Proceedings of A.P. Akademi of Sciences" regularly which includes invited review Article, summaries of Endowment Lectures and original research contributions in all branches of Science including Engineering and Medicine. Prof. Bir Bahadur, (Dept. of Botany, KU), Hyderabad has been entrusted this responsibility as Editor of Publications and with an Editorial Board.


APAS ACTIVITIES

SEMINARS & SYMPOSIA:

The Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences has been organizing various Seminars and Symposia in different places of the State, on relevant topics from time to time. In all these Seminars, day – to – day developments in Science and Technology are being highlighted The Akademi was trying to publicize various ways and means to overcome problems in giving basic needs to common man.

The Socio Political Economic constraints, which have to be tackled if the advantage is to be taken of the Technological innovations, were also stressed in various seminars and symposia The Akademi on several occasions has brought the Scientists, Social Scientists, Public man and Government Officials together and discuss matters to common interest.

The Akademi is trying to practice the Science Education by taking up some voluntary programs to supplement the efforts of other Organizations for the modernization of curricula particularly at school level. Efforts are being made to popularize Science through establishment of appropriate communicative channels with the public.

POPULAR LECTURES

The Akademi has been organizing Popular Lectures all over the State on different subjects from time to time. These popular lectures have been delivered by eminent Scientists of International repute in different parts of the State mainly with an aim to reach research scholars, teachers, students and common man.

REFRESHER COURSES

The Akademi is organizing "Refresher Courses" for Science teachers from time to time, in different centers of Andhra Pradesh in order to provide exposure to the recent developments Science teaching.

SCIENCE WEEKS

Organisations of science weeks at different centres in the State involving science teachers and children and by encouraging children to participate in competitions like essay writing, elocution and quiz.

HONOURING EMINENT SCIENTISTS

The Akademi honours eminent scientists of Andhra on different occasion who have contributes substantially for the growth of Science and Technology and for their significant contributions in their respective fields of Science Technology.

 
AUDIO VISUAL PROGRAMMES

The Akademi is organizing Audio Visual programs, relevant to the growth and development of Science and Technology using video cassettes on different topics Science and Technology in various educational institutions from time to time. In this Direction presently new topics are being identified by involving experienced science writers. 

PREPARATION OF VIDEO CASSETTES

Under the program of preparation of Video Cassettes covering different fields of Science and Technology at popular level in Telugu, two video cassettes on "Birth Defects" NS "From Darkness to Light" were prepared by the Akademi, which were telecasted by Doordarshan and distributed to Medical Colleges in the State.

BIBILOGRAPHY OF S & T PUBLICATIONS

The Akademi has prepared the bibliography of Telugu books published in different branches of science and technology from the year 1863 to 1965, which is an unique effort and first of its kind, undertaken by the Akademi.

LIBRARY

The Akademi established a library and has books on different subjects of Science and Technology in addition to scientific journals and periodicals for the benefit of public.

TELUGU SCIENCE WRITERS

The Akademi encourages Telugu Science Writers in Andhra Pradesh by bringing together all the Telugu Science Writers on a common platform by encouraging the original writings at popular level in different fields of Science and Technology from time to time.

ORIENTATION COURSES FOR SCIENCE TEACHERS

The Akademi conducts Orientation Courses for Science Teachers from different Districts of A.P., highlighting the steps to motivate children to take up Innovative Science Projects on different topics , at school level.

BHARAT JANA GYAN VIGYAN JATHA

A science Awareness programme entitled Bharat Jana Vigyan Jatha (BJVJ-1992). Mass Action for National Regeneration (MANAR) covering 100 locations in each district in different districts of A.P., was organized as part of National Programme.

EARTHQUAKE AWARENESS PROGRAMME

The Akademi has taken up earthquake awareness programme to educate people in villages by way of distribution of material through posters and by organizing suitable Programs to reach the rural masses.

PRESENTATION OF YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARDS

Presentation of Young Scientist Awards for the outstanding research work carried out by the scientists below 35 years of age drawn from different Laboratories and Universities in different fields of Science and Technology in A.P., is also annual activity of Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences.

CHILDREN’S SCIENBCE CONGRESS

The Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences has been organizing "A.P. State level National Children Science Congress" to encourage children in the age group of 10-17 years,

towards Science and Technology with active participation of children and Science Teachers.

 


APAS ENDOWMENTS

The Akademi has instituted Endowments as mentioned below and the annual interest accrued on each endowment is being utilized for organizing the annual function by inviting Eminent Scientists on National and International repute.

  1. PROF. S. BHAGVANTHAM MEMORIAL LECTURE to be delivered by a distinguished Scientist of India annually
  2. PROF. Y. NAYUDAMMA MEMORIAL LECTURE to be delivered by an eminent Scientist of India
  3. DR S. BLAKRISHNA MEMORIAL LECTURE to be delivered by an eminent ‘Earth Scientist’
  4. SPECIAL LECTURE with the Endowment given by Padmabhushan Dr. A.S. Rao 60th Birthday Felicitation Committee in the field of "Electronics and Nuclear Physics".
  5. MRS. SITA MAHALAKSHMI MEMORIAL LECTURE to be delivered by an eminent Scientist, annually.
  6. PADMABHUSHAN DR. P. SIVA REDDY ENDOWMENT LECTURE to be delivered by a distinguished medical scientist of India annually.
  7. DRS. C. SITA DEVI & C. RAJA RAM MOHAN REDDY ENDOWMENT LECTURE to be delivered by eminent Medical Person annually.
  8. ANNUAL GOLD MEDAL IN MEMORY OF PROF. Y. NAYUDAMMA –
  9. "Prof. Y. Nayudamma Gold Medal" to be given to a Distinguished Technologist in A.P.

  10. ANNUAL MEDALS TO FIRST RANK B.TECH (Chemical Technology) STUDENTS of different university of A.P. , in memory of Prof. Y. Nayudamma Memorial Meda".
  11. AWARDS INSTITUTED BY PADMABHUSHAN DR. P. SIVA REDDY annually to be given to:
  12. a) Eminent Medical Man cum States man of India; ( b) Best Teacher in Ophthalmology

    c) Best Researcher in Ophthalmology; (d) Best Medico Social Worker
