Subrahmanyasastri Sripada (1891-1961)

Subrahmanyasastri Sripada was born in 1891 in Mahendravada village in the East Godavari district.  His parents were Mahalakshmisodemma and Lakshmipathisomayajulu.  Sripada family was a Vaidika (priest) Brahmin family.  His father was an astrologer.  Sastri married his maternal cousin Sitamma.

He learned Vedas and astrology from his father.  He didn’t like the Vaidika Brahmin profession (priest) and astrology.  He wanted to be a clerk in a law office. But, it didn’t work out.  Then, he went to twin poets Venkata-Ramakrishna-kavulu in Pithapuram to study Telugu literature and astaavadhanam. He went to Rajamahendravaram to start Prabuddhamdhra and Abhyudaya journals. In 1917, he started a pharmacy called Gandharva Pharmacy and practiced medicine.

His works include vaarakaamta, raamadeva vijayam, saahasika raajaputram, paanigraheeta sravanaanamda srimkhala, midhunaanuraagam, veerapooja, smasaanvaatika, nanaadha baalika, pooladamda, rakshaabamdhanamu etc.
