Open University
Andhra Pradesh state government has established an Open University in 1982
to give opportunities to those who can not go to a traditional University
for higher education. It was renamed as Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University,
in honor of a Marathi leader representing the down trodden classes. (Apparently,
there are no eminent Telugu leaders from down trodden tribes/castes to
name a State University in the entire recorded history of Telugus. So,
we had to borrow leaders from our neighbors). However, the first
Vice Chancellor was Prof. Ramreddy (from a forward tribe). The courses,
examinations, and other educational programs are very flexible. There are
no restrictions such as age limits. Anybody between 18 to 70 years of age
may enroll in the University for any course. Audio and vedio facilities
are provided for the students. There are 107 educational centers
throughout the state. It has three educational centers in Jails of Hyderabad,
Warangal and Rajamandri. Approximately 80,000 students are on the rolls
of the University. So far 20,000 degrees are awarded.
